16 Survivors, 4 Tribes, 1 Team… Let the Games Begin!

What happens when you combine 16 competitive colleagues, four Survivor tribes and one very important message about unity? You get an unforgettable afternoon of New Zealand team building, packed with laughs, challenges and some serious teamwork!

We recently headed to the beautiful Bay of Islands to host a customised Survivor team building experience for Rosvall Sawmill. As part of their company conference, the team wanted something a little different. They were looking for a fun conference breakout session that would bring their company values to life, encourage collaboration and reinforce their overall theme of unity.

And what better way to put teamwork to the test than with a little Survivor-style competition?

From Individual Players to Survivor Tribes

With 16 participants ready to take on the challenge, we kicked things off with an individual Survivor showdown. Before anyone could rely on their teammates, they first had to put their own skills to the test!

It was the perfect way to get everyone moving, break the ice and bring out those competitive personalities. After all, every great team is made up of individuals with different strengths, skills and ways of thinking.

Once the individual challenge was complete, it was time to form our four Survivor tribes. With four people in each team, the competition was officially on!

Four Tribes, One Goal: Survivor Meets Teamwork

With their tribes assembled, our Rosvall contestants faced a series of fun, competitive team challenges. Each activity tested a different combination of communication, problem-solving, strategy and teamwork.

From physical challenges to puzzles and tasks that required a little creative thinking, there was something for everyone. Some participants naturally stepped up to lead, while others brought clever ideas, attention to detail or a steady hand when things got tricky.

Of course, there was plenty of friendly rivalry along the way! Each tribe wanted to come out on top, but the real challenge was learning how to combine their individual strengths to achieve a shared goal.

This was exactly what Rosvall wanted to highlight through their conference theme of Kotahitanga, a Māori concept centred around unity and togetherness. Being part of a successful team doesn’t mean everyone needs to think or work in the same way. Instead, it’s about recognising what each person brings to the table and finding ways to succeed together.

The Ultimate Twist: Four Tribes Become One

Just when our Survivor contestants thought they had the competition figured out, we threw in one final twist!

After spending the afternoon competing against one another, it was time to put the tribal rivalry aside. All 16 participants came together for the ultimate unity challenge.

The mission? Complete our team pipeline challenge as one big team!

Using individual sections of pipeline, the group had to work together to transport a ball from one end of the course to the other. Sounds simple enough, right? Well, not quite!

Success required careful coordination, clear communication and plenty of patience. Everyone had an important role to play, and one missed connection could send the whole team back to square one.

It was a fantastic way to bring the day’s message to life. Each person was responsible for their own section, but the overall result depended on everyone working together. No single person or tribe could complete the challenge alone.

And that was the whole point!

Small Team Building, Big Impact!

One of the best things about this Survivor experience was how perfectly it suited a smaller group. With just 16 participants, everyone had the opportunity to get involved, contribute their strengths and enjoy a little friendly competition.

Team building for small teams doesn’t need to mean smaller experiences. In fact, smaller groups can create some of the most memorable team building moments, especially when activities are customised around the people taking part.

For Rosvall Sawmill, the afternoon was about much more than winning challenges. It was an opportunity to take the conversations from their conference and turn them into real experiences. Through plenty of laughter, teamwork and a few competitive moments, the group explored what unity looks like in action.

The biggest takeaway? We all bring something different to the team, but we’re stronger when we work together.
